Gaurav Shah – Bio
Gaurav Shah is a GRAMMY®-nominated singer-songwriter, accomplished vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist (harmonium and bansuri), as well as a founding member of Karyshma, which he also uses as his stage name. His artistry blends the depth of Indian classical traditions with contemporary global sounds.
Trained rigorously in both India and Texas under legendary maestros Ustad Sultan Khan (sarangi/vocal) and Pandit Ronu Majumdar (bansuri, Indian Bamboo Flute), Gaurav immersed himself in the world of Indian raga (Indian melodic scales) and improvisation. As an undergrad at Harvard University, he founded Karyshma and later became a cornerstone of Falu’s band, serving as lead male vocalist, principal songwriter, and instrumentalist.
Gaurav has contributed to multiple acclaimed albums with Falu, including the GRAMMY®-nominated Falu’s Bazaar(2019), the GRAMMY® Award-winning A Colorful World (2022, as engineer). In 2023, he received a GRAMMY® nomination for Best Global Music Performance for Abundance in Millets, a song he co-wrote and performed with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to raise awareness about world hunger. Adopted by the United Nations during the International Year of Millets, the song has become a global anthem for sustainability, food security, and hope.
His harmonium, bansuri, and vocals are featured across these projects, and he has performed on world-class stages including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Lollapalooza Festival, National Geographic, and Fox TV. His contributions were also highlighted in the Smithsonian’s Beyond Bollywood exhibit, representing Indian American trendsetting artists.
As a singer, songwriter, and a recording engineer, Gaurav has been integral to albums such as Nearly Home with Karyshma, Foras Road with Falu, Someday with Karyshma. With decades of performance, recording, and songwriting experience, he continues to bring depth, diversity, and a powerful cultural voice to the global music landscape — honoring his classical roots while creating music that resonates across borders.
Gaurav tours internationally with Falu as the band’s lead male singer and instrumentalist, performing on harmonium and bansuri. In 2026, the Indian Consulate will launch their new collaborative production, Surrender, at Carnegie Hall — a show designed by Falu and Gaurav to celebrate and promote Indian classical music.
